HTTP Error & Tomcat Error Helps

I'm using Tomcat 5.0.19 to serve my JSP pages.  At times I get http errors, and/or Tomcat errors.  In trying to analyze my problem, I am using the http error information off my browser screen, and also the Tomcat log.  (The browser screen directs me to the Tomcat Logs for the "full stack trace.")

Are there some general helps I could read that would help me in interpreting what I'm seeing?

generally there are 2 types of error. compile error and runtime error. futher there are 2 types of compile error, jsp syntax error and java syntax error.

for the jsp syntax error, you'll see the line number of your jsp page and error description, it think that should be very straightforward.

jsp page is then translated into java source code and javac will try to compile it into class file. you migth get java compile error at this point. it refers to a java file, you should be able to find the java fine in tomcat work directory, locate the link and find the corresponding jsp line.

then, the jsp file is executed. you could get runtime error for various reason, one common cause is the program bug. you'll need to study the stacktrace, make sure have a look at the root cause. and find the _jsp.java file in the stacktrace, study the method call before and after it and also, you should find the line of the java file in tomcat work directory.
