No boot for Compaq 5000US

I had a lady give me her Compaq because she said it stopped working. The computer was on went to screensaver the never came back. I power up the pc and the hard drive spins and cd-rom spins but never gets to the bios to boot up. All cables are in correctly. No beeps, no lights on keyboard only thing the is noticed running is cpu fan. What's up??
Compaq Presario 5000US 750 mhz only a couple of years old.

You will have to determine why it doesn't boot, and there are a number of factors that apply in this case:
- CMOS lost settings
- bad RAM
- faulty video card
- faulty or inadequate power supply
- bad motherboard

If you have spare parts that you know work that are compatible with this machine, you can try swapping them in one at a time to see if that changes anything.  For the CMOS, a new battery will do.  For the motherboard, if you eliminate everything else, then it is likely to be the motherboard.
