Trying to find other sites to link to...

Hi, I am trying to find other websites to link to my site.  I have a greeting card site, and would like to link to other greeting-related sites like flower or chocolate websites.  However, I go to google and type in "flowers" and a lot of the sites that I found do not seem to have a links page containing other  sites.  Same results if I do a google search on "chocolates".

I know that linking up with other sites will increase search engine positioning in Google but how come these sites don't link up with other sites and still get top positioning?  What should I do?

Thank you so much for your help,
noijet.

Link building is an art as well as a science also it is very time consuming.  Here are two approaches that can help:

1. Make a list of all your main competitors and then search on Google for link:www.yourcompetitor.com Tabulate them in Excel and you will end up with all the sites that have linked to all your competitors. Email them and ask for a link to your site.

2. Prepare a list of your keywords and search on Google for terms like this and make a list of suitable sites for emailing later:

"Suggest a link" + "your keyword(s)"
"Suggest a site" + "your keywords(s)"
"Suggest URL" + "your keyword(s)"
"Suggest an URL" + "your keyword(s)"
"Add a link" + "your keyword(s)"
"Add a site" + "your keyword(s)"
"Add URL" + "your keyword(s)"
"Add an URL" + "your keyword(s)"
"Submit a link" + "your keyword(s)"
"Submit a site" + "your keyword(s)"
"Submit URL" + "your keyword(s)"
"Submit an URL" + "your keyword(s)"
"directory" + "your keyword(s)"
"directories" + "your keyword(s)"
"favourite links" + "your keyword(s)"
"cool sites" + "your keyword(s)"
"cool places" + "your keyword(s)"
"recommended links" + "your keyword(s)"
etc., etc.

You get the idea :)  You just have to use your imagination for this one!
