broken pipe

Hi all
We use a load balancer which control the load between to tomcat web servers.
The load balanced perform health check towards a servlet.
Sometimes this health check ends with following error message:  
        Servlet - unable to print response to the explorer: Broken pipe

and it even cause this servlet stop responding till restart the tomcat.
Any idea what cause this servlet response ? how can I solve it ?

I've read there can be a problem with the implementation if the user stops mid-connection:
