Visit www.squid-cache.org

Squid is a caching proxy, meaning that many end-users making requests for http and ftp resources through squid, the likelihood that fetching the same static objects is high.  These objects are cached on the local network in squid's cache, and squid returns them locally at wire speed, rather that saturating the pipe that way.  Good firewall policies in place can eliminate the possiblity of web traffic going directly to these servers, instead going through the squid cache.

Squid can be set up to fetch content through other proxies, like privoxy, which can eliminate malicious or inappropriate content.  Privoxy rewrites the html without the bad content.

So it could be set up like this:

HTTP/FTP  --->    PRIVOXY (filter bad content) --->  SQUID (cache static content locally) ---> end user request URL

Remember, it's only yourself you're hurting if you don't write your own report.  There's tons of info, diagrams, etc. on caching and proxies as a layer of security to an organization.  Start with looking up www.squid-cache.org, then www.privoxy.org and go from there.

Hope that helps...
