Are there any windows updates which upon install will cause Disk Cleanup in windows 2000 Pro to stop responding? Something about compressing old files.

Try system file checker

start --> run --> sfc /scannow and press "enter".

How long are you waiting before which you think it is not completing ?

Have you tested disk cleanup on a smaller drive which has less files so that it can do it fast ?

Make sure to close all applications and then try disk cleanup ..

May be a virus or spyware is running at the background.. Check for them

I had this same problem myself a few times. Unfortunately I could find the Microsoft article I used but annoyances.org have this fix.

---------------------------------
1. Type Regedit in Start - Run
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers i on\Explorer\Volume Caches
3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Reboot
6. Run Disk Cleanup
