Disk cleanup wont complete

Are there any windows updates which upon install will cause Disk Cleanup in windows 2000 Pro to stop responding? Something about compressing old files.

Try system file checker

start --> run --> sfc /scannow and press "enter".

How long are you waiting before which you think it is not completing ?

Have you tested disk cleanup on a smaller drive which has less files so that it can do it fast ?

Make sure to close all applications and then try disk cleanup ..

May be a virus or spyware is running at the background.. Check for them

I had this same problem myself a few times. Unfortunately I could find the Microsoft article I used but annoyances.org have this fix.

---------------------------------
1. Type Regedit in Start - Run
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers i on\Explorer\Volume Caches
3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Reboot
6. Run Disk Cleanup

I just had the same problem, so I am a new subscriber to this site as a result...I tried alot of "solutions" to fix the issue but the only one that worked was the one diggisaur said to do...too bad I found this after I fixed my machine the long slow way (trying other unsuccessful solutions first then doing what diggisaur said here)...the microsoft link is:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812248

save yourself alot of time and try this first! IT WORKS!!!

I will leave the following recommendation for this question in the Cleanup topic area:
    Split: rbkumaran {http:#10733504}, diggisaur

Any objections should be posted here in the next 4 days. After that time, the question will be closed.
