From the Books Online on simple recovery in SQL Server 2000:

This model is similar to setting the "trunc. log on chkpt." database option in Microsoft® SQL Server™ version 7.0 or earlier.

trunc. log on chkpt.: When true, a checkpoint truncates the inactive part of the log when the database is in log truncate mode.

EXEC sp_dboption @dbname = 'database name',
    @optname = 'trunc. log on chkpt.',
    @optvalue = 'TRUE'
