Open with function within windows explorer automatically opens notepad

Hello,

I have had this issue for a long while now, and am now fed up enough to post a question.  When I right click on a file(any type) within windows explorer, and select open with. Instantly and automatically the file is opened with notepad, wether it be a document, a movie, or a .jpg.  How can I restore functionality to the "open with" function.  Supposedly if you select open with, it gives you a window which allow's you to select which application you wan't to open the file with, in a working win2k install.

Thanks,

Dan

Control panel / folder options  / Files types tab
select the file type to want to change and select the program you want to open it with

if that doens't work then there is something really wrong

Thanks for the comment ryangclear,

But I would like to use the "open with" fucntionality, imagine wanting to open a file with notepad one day, then in another instance I would have to reset the file type association to open it with a progam named "text pad" at another time.  The good thing about the "open with" function is that it remember what app you have used to open a file extension with and it will allow you to select from them.

Thanks,

Dan

oops, I missunderstood your question ( I was watching the simpsons at the same time )

Try creating a new user account and see if the same affect applies.

how about I export the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\OpenWithList reg key and send it to you in an email to see if that fixes it?

I took a closer look at the reg export and I think these are the only extensions necessary.

But what I'd like to know is how did this get deleted :)

Im not exactly sure how it was deleted, probably the reg cleaner utility ngbregclean, but I don't want to blame it specifically, it could have been any of the other reg cleaner's I use.  Also the open with function only works partly.  If a file type has been previously associated with an app, I can select the other app, but if I click on Choose Program, notepad again immediatly open's the file.

Hi there, that doesn't work for me, I still have the same problem. I imported the registry keys mentioned above but still the problem exists.... Whenever I choose "open with" it opens Notepad. No luck for me, if anything has further ideas, let me know. Or an email would be nice with some registry files to for fixing the problem, thanks a lot.
