windows explorer will not open

Applications work fine and I am able to navigate to files within applications. Trying to go to Windows explorer, My computer control panel, etc. goes right back to the desktop.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Try,

Click Start - Run, type SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.
Popin the CD when prompted and complete the wizard and  check if that helps.

Also, try to run a complete Viurs/Malware check on the system and eliminate all of those things from the computer.

For Malwares,

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

CWShredder: http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml

For online scan:

This should help. Also, ensure Windows Update is run and system updated up to date.

Will the explorer open in safe mode and do you have a pci nic and broadband ?  If so start safe mode with networking. go on the internet go here then go half way down the page on the left side and click on online security check and antivirus scan.  do the online virus scan the other security check part is real good for testing your firewall after U get your pc fixed. BY the way I think if you have dial up that will work to get you on the internet and when you click on scan U have to accept all the symantec pop up boxes.
