Install W98 on computer currently with ME from "new PC only" disk

Originally this computer came with w98, and I have the CD for w98 which is
marked "for new PC only".  Later I had put ME on this PC, and that's how it is now.

Now I want to put w98 back on.

Trying the CD in the straightforward way says that "there is a newer version
of windows on this machine, setup will be disabled".  Trying another way (making
the PC boot off CD) gets me further, but eventually says "this PC has windows
installed already, this PC is only for new PCs".

So, how do I do this?  Its fine with me to totally format the disk and install from
scratch (all important data is off the machine).  But how do I do this?

Hi tullhead,

Boot with a windows98 bootdisk (if you don't have one, get one from http://www.bootdisk.com)
then, at the command prompt, just type:

Format C: /q/u

Afterwards, just reboot the computer with the win98 installation cd-rom and install windows98

LucF,

Followed your suggestion, and it *nearly* worked.  But now when booting, it
complains that C:/WINDOWS/system/vmm32.vxd is missing and so it can't start.

I can then boot in "safe mode".  I then found a copy of vmm32.vxd on another w98
computer here, but I don't seem to have a way to put it on the target machine
because it doesn't seem to know about the floppy.  I guess the floppy's driver is
not available in Safe mode, or.....?

Suggestion?

Thanks

Did you have any errors while installing windows?

Try cleaning the cd-rom and then install again.

There were no reported errors (that I saw - unless they flashed by)
But.... I cleaned the CD, and re-installed, and it worked!!!!
Wow, thanks.
