generic host winservices 32 problem

hi I have bought a brand new computer pentium 4 2.8 with 1 gig of ram but i am getting an
irritating problem whereby internet explorer is coming up with this error message
" generichost winservices 32 " "must close program".
this it does but internal modemis still connected to phoneline, can hear modem data tones.
I then need to restart computer  reconnect to internet as computer thinks that modem is still in use even though the browser has closed.
very annoying.sometimes this happens after 10 minutes, sometimes 20 sometimes not at all.
I am using xp home edition.

Thanx

It really sounds like the MS Blaster Worm that was making the rounds a while back. Do the following before connecting to the internet:

First thing I suggest you do is the following; while your machine is not connected to the internet:
START | RUN | REGEDIT
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUN
remove any reference to MSBLAST
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUN
remove any reference to MSBLAST

Search your HD for MSBLAST* and delete any references found.

NEXT:

Go to this link first to close the backdoor:
Patch : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C8B8A846-F541-4C15-8C9F-220354449117&displaylang=en

Go here to download and remove any residuals of msblaster:
Removal tool : http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

Finally:
Update your Virus Scanning Software.
Also go to www.windowsupdate.com and get the latest service packs for your system

Of course I've been known to be wrong. :)

thanx for your answer but it has not solved the problem unfortunately.
I have had some experience with blaster worm and the rpc timeout virus but i did not feel that this was the problem with this machine as the problem started as soon as i got it home
and the system was used "straight out of the box".
There is no trace of the blasterworm on the harddrive or in the registery.
The error mesage that comes at frequent intervals is this....
szApp name: szAppver 0.0.0.0 szmodname-unknown szmodver0.0.0.0
offset 0.0.0.0
this doesnt seem particulary informative but it may mean something to your good self.
from my viewpoint as an intermediate level amateur i feel there could be a software
problem with one of the pre-installed apps, but of course if i exchanged the system at the shop for the same same make/model then
presumably the same problem will reoccur as the system software/configuration is preinstalled by the manufacturer.
Machine is only 4 days old!
should it really be my responsibilty to sort out the prob?
