Exchange 5.5 Incoming and Outgoing Message Delivery

We are experienceing major delays in receiving and sending messages at times.  We have web servers making smtp requests to the Exchange 5.5 server and I was wondering if it the outbound queue is becoming overloaded and preventing the inbound mail from being processed in a timely manner.  Is the process synchronous or asynchronous?

To my knowledge the process is asynchronous and there are 4 differents queues. 2 for incomming and 2 for outgoing.

just have a look at your IMC queue It my give you an idea at what is going on.

I actually have already been looking at those, the only issue I could see was the spam emails that seem to bog down the outbound queue, I go through and delete those on a regular bases.  There was little to nothing unusual about the queue levels other than the bogus emails I had to delete.  Is there anything else I should be looking at?  HAve not supported an Exchange server in over 3 years, just getting back into the swing of things and feel maybe I'm forgetting to look at something.

You may want to prevent non delivery report out so you will cut much of the traffic.  I did it and my server is now slepping all day. But we were receiving over 10 000 spam messages per day.
