using software help to find link potential

There's a software app out there that searches for potential urls that might be worthwhile to approach for linking.  I have not used it, but I saw it on the web.  Until now, I've been doing this manually.  I don't think this does more than search for potential contacts (and it seems to prepare a letter which I'm disinclined to use).  But, this endeavor being what it is, I'd like to ask about it  before using something like it since there are so many flags up.  I might inadvertently be doing something that is not a good idea.

So I'm asking for opinions/advice!

Hi linque -

Your intuition re this software is correct don't touch it!  Most webmasters will junk an automated link request faster than you can blink. A hand crafted email or telephone call (which is better if you can do it) is the only way.  It can be very hard and tedious work :(

as always, your expertise is appreciated (and your advise followed).  All I can say is..  I find it somewhat disconcerting that what seems totally benign and often a "gut" reaction  "hey..  that sounds kewl".. is, in fact, counter-productive.  How's a person supposed to know!!! ??(without duz!  :)   )

Thanks duz!!
