Theres usually two reasons for this error

1, Virus or trajan infection

Online (Free) Virus Checking can be done at

SYMANTEC (You must have ActiveX enabled on your browser for it to work!)
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/vc_scan.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=ROSUPWFYJOKMFIDPMSV

Trojan Remover :http://www.simplysup.com/

Or something is attempting to change the window theme, find the UXTHEME.dll and rename it to UXTHEME.old then do a reboot and see if that clears the problem

also does the error say anything about  NTDLL.DLL if it does you might need to replace this DLL from the windowss 2000 CD

You can find it on your windows CD, it will look like

NTDLL.dl_

Copy it to your hard drive and from command prompt type

expand NTDLL.dl_ NTDLL.dll

Then copy it to the original location

Great, Pete, I renamed UXTHEME.dll to old and it worked.
I had run every known virus remover, recovered system and a few more etceteras and none worked
By the way, what is UXTHEME.dll and what is its function?
Shall I do someting more just as insurance?
Thanks very much.
Oscar.

It is me again:
I tried to run Symantec online virus scan and was rejected because of: "ActiveX and/or Scripting is not supported or is not enabled ".

I checked my browser and it IS enabled.
What...?

Greetings.
Oscar.
