How do i permanently remove searchexe?

My PC recently contracted the pesky searchexe toolbar, passthrough homepage and all that goes with it. Using hijack this I managed to remove the toolbar, but the homepage and pop up return every time I go online after restarting my PC, as does the log entry:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://searchexe.com/passthrough/index.html?      http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/uk/enu/gen/default.htm

this recurs regardless of how many times i delete it. Clearly something is causing my system to revert to searchexe after every reboot - here is my logfile, can anybody suggest what I need to remove?

I would advise these softwares as well.. Update them before running them

SpyBot-S&D : http://www.webattack.com/download/dlspybot.shtml

Ad-aware : http://www.webattack.com/download/dladaware.shtml

CWShredder: http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml

Secondly, Start --> run --> Type in "msconfig" and press "Enter"
goto Startup tab
Disable all the applications there.Reboot the machine

Check now if anything comes up again .. If not enable each one of the application one by one to find the culprit.

Third, disable system restore , delete temp internet files and cookies.

Make a backup of registry

Check these registry entries

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Page
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Page_URL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Search_URL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\SearchAssistant
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\CustomizeSearch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar

and remove searchexe if found

Cleaning your computer  - and protecting it in the future -  can't be answered with one issue.

As you can see in my url below there are at least 7 different issues, where you should decide 1 of each, or else you does'nt protect your computer at all.

The reason is, that the many different programs not always protects against each other, and each of them does'nt protect equally.

It's very important, that you study all of these issues in my knowledgebase (some of them are freeware):
http://www.tryware.dk/English/Knowledgebase/HowToProtectYourComputer.html

BTW: I'm using the Trend Micro virus-suite, and SoftScan , and haven't got any of my servers or computers infected since 1999.

Hi!

Took a look at your HJT log.

The following is an automatic updater for Grokster - which contains Cydoor, among other possible spyware/malware.

O4 - Startup: Check For Dope Wars Updates.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dopewars\WiseUpdt.exe

Good luck!
