Inbox for a global security group??

can i give access to a group of users, allowing access to the global security group's inbox (I suspect it doesn't).

Froggy, can you please be more specific?  You can certainly give a distribution group access to the inbox folder on a mailbox if that is what you are after.  It has to be a distribution group though.  You do this in Outlook.  Right-click on the Inbox folder and go to the permissions page.

right now it is a security group (and a bunch perms associated with the group for file shares)...if I change it to a distro group, will that void all the perms?

No, you can mail enable a security group to make a distribution group.  Don't belive me though, run a test on an inert group.  :)
