windows 2000 adv server installation

hi,
Well there is a problem regarding windows 200 installation. i have windows 98 and window xp prof installed on my office's c and d drive. but i also want to install windows 2000 adv server for some development purpose. i have seen that when somebdy tries to install windows 2000 through windows 98 on a system already having windows xp prof then it will give problems like clashing files etc. and this result in windows xp corruption as well as windows 2000 corruption, how to solve this problem.,

what happens is... when you add an older version of windows to a drive with a newer version already such as XP.. the xp master boot record gets replaced with the one from 2k.  Then XP no worky.

after you do the win2k install... boot in xp recovery console to run fixmbr

thanks, but is this full proof because i am doing this on ur words..if it works then u will get loads of points...i can tell you that.

I just went through the same deal last week... except without 98.
I ended up doing a inplace repair of XP instead of the simpler and quicker fixmbr.  ( I had other problems with XP)
The repair does the fixmbr and a whole lotta more.  All is good now.

Yes 2k should be fine before and after the fix is done. I think 98 will be as well.

hey i tried this but after i installed windows 2000 and done fixmbr "device\harddrive0\partition2" (d drive - got this through map command) nothing is fixed. my winxp is corrupt now...what should i do...
from my side i can increase only the points...

boot from the XP setup cd and press 'R' to get into the recovery console. from there, log into your windows installation

run these two commands
fixboot
fixmbr

worst case situation... you may have to do a full repair to winXP.
It will replace and restore many files on the partition.  Data should not be lost ( I haven't had any problems before)
You will lose the windows updates that you have installed already.  
The process acts like it is reinstalling but not a complete reinstall.
