Desktop Directory Shortcut - show folders panel by default

I'd like to have the Folder Tree panel show by default in Windows Explorer whenever I click on a directory shortcut from my desktop or Quick Launch toolbar.
I've got more than enough points saved up so I'll put this one at 500 to perk the interest of anyone that comes up with a viable solution.  I would really prefer a solution that changes this settings for all Windows directory shortcuts instead of a macro or batch file 'dirty fix' that works only for a single particular shortcut.

I realize there is a Folders button that will display the folder tree that you can place in the Toolbar for Windows Explorer, but I am really interested in having this folder tree displayed by default.  Call me lazy, but it bugs me and I'm interested to see the solutions that come up.
