But he still wont be able to use the key on his new installation, will he?
I have tried ghosting across PC's, and in my experience, if the h/ware is not the same, then XP complains that something has changed and wants Windows to be re-activated.

Is there a way around this, without calling Microsoft to explain the situation?

Thx again,

JB
I have found that if the software can be reactivated online if the original activation is older than 6-9 months. Meaning if the key is old enough, it will accept the key online without calling MS for activation.
I used keyfinder from  http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml, it gave me a product key but when I tried to reinstall windows xp on the same computer, setup would not accept the key as vaild?
what happend?
