playing a dvd in my ibook

I just recently purchased a second hand ibook. Its supposed to hve dvd/cdr drive abilities. I am new to mac and i tried to watch a dvd but when i place the dvd in the drive nothing happens. It just shows the dvd on the desktop, thats it. Is there a special software i need. I installed windows media player for mac but that still does nothing.

Yeow. Get Windows Media Player off of it NOW. That'll cause nothing but headaches.

Your iBook can either automatically launch DVD Player when a DVD is inserted, or just place it on the desktop and do nothing. Yours is set to do the latter. Just open the DVD Player application and it'll play the DVD. If you want it automatic, open your "CDs and DVDs" control panel and select an auto action.

Just to add to the above from weed...
since your new to mac!

weed assumed that you where running OSX

under OS9 you can find the DVD player app in the Macintosh HD/Applications(Mac OS 9)/

Under OSX Macintosh HD/Applications/DVD player

And for the "Control Panel" for CD's-DVD's under OSX  go to the "BLUE APPLE" at the top  then "System Preferances" and then you will see CD's-DVD's
