MAPI error in exporting messages from Outlook Express to Outlook.

I just purchased a new PC with XP Prof, IE 6 and Office Prof Outlook 2003.  My previous machine has W95, IE 5.5 and Outlook Express 5.5.  I want to move my messages from Outlook Express to Outlook.  When I try to export them, I receive the error "The Export could not be performed.  An error occurred while initializing MAPI".  MS KB 179637 says to clear the Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client check box.  My version of Outlook Express does not have such a box anywhere in the Options.

How can I safely move the messages to my new PC?  Either, I need a way to fix the MAPI error or I need a workaround to get past the problem.  I only need to move the messages.  I do not need to move newsgroups or settings.

Hi eminence,

Where are you trying to check that option in outlook express 6 or windows 98 ?

Are you trying to do that in your previous machine  or new machine.

In OE 6 you should enable this under "tools --> options ---> general"
At the bottom you should see " this application is the default mail handler"

Here is what you can do ..

First install Outlook 2003 in your new machine. If it is already done fine.
Now in your previous machine , open OE.
go to tools --> options ---> maintainence ----> store folder.
check that path and go to that path.

Copy all the files in that path.

Now move those files to the new machine.

Now in the new machine , open OE. go to that same store folder location and check the path.
go to that path.
Now whatever you had copied from old machine , paste it there .

open OE and you should see all your emails there ..

Now open Outlook. donot close OE .
go to file ---> import and export ---> import from outlook express.
This  should work.

Thanks
