You probably need to be logged in with admin rights to install it.

as Wyliecoyoteuk said you need admin rights first
next you need to disable any other programs that may be running in the background.

Go to start run type msconfig hit enter then go to the startup tab write down everything on a piece of paper that is checked or unchecked whichever is easier for you. Then uncheck everything or select disable all. then hit apply then ok. Then reboot, when windows comes back up you will get a message saying you are running windows in diagnostic mode this is normal ignore the message and continue on try installing the printer at this point following the directions below...

Also make sure you have the printer connected directly to the USB port on the back of the PC and not into a USB port on a keyboard or into a hub.

Do this to install the printer (follow these directions exactly)

Go to Start, Settings, Printers (Windows XP: Start, Control Panel, Printers and Faxes).
Click on Add Printer and then click Next.
Select Local Printer and then click Next.
Select the required Port (Usb00x Virtual Printer Port if the printer has already been connected) and click Next. Note: If the printer has not been connected, select File.
Click the Have Disk button.
When the Install From Disk screen appears, click Browse.
From the Locate File screen, in the Look In: option, select Lex 600 CD / Drivers / Win_XP2K / lxbcw2k.
Click Open and then click OK in the next screen.
When the name Lexmark Z600 Series is displayed, click Next.
Leave the name as Lexmark Z600 Series and choose whether or not you want the printer to be the Default.
Indicate whether or not you want to print a Test Page. Note: This is the Windows Test Page. It won't be printed before the cartridges are selected.
Click on Finish.  The printer files will then start to copy from the CD.
Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the printer.

If you get an unknown device or what not for the printer you may need to enable USB support for the printer in XP:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager.
Click on the plus sign (+) beside Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Right click the problem device (printer).
Go to Properties, Driver, Update Driver.
Choose the option to Install from list or Specific Location.
Click Don't Search, I will chose the driver to install and then click Next.
Click Have Disk.
Click Browse.
In the Look In screen, select the C: drive from the drop-down list.
Double-click Windows, then double-click INF. The USBPRINT.INF file for the printer will be displayed.
Select this file and click Open.
Click OK in the remaining screens that appear

Finally once the driver is installed go back into msconfig and recheck everything you unchecked in the previous steps above then apply and ok

hi thanks for the help, as i have admin rights i followed your steps exactly but still failed.
Ive been looking on the internet and looked upon the problem and one site said that it
could be spoolss.dll and spoolss.exe which is causing the problem, could that be the problem?

i have checked the remote prcedure call, and it says it is running. And my print spooler seems to be stopped and i just remembered that everytime i went to install the printer, it told me that print spooler had to be activated to start the installation, so it obviously is not starting up!
