Starcraft (as well as Warcraft/Warcraft 2/Warcraft 3)

X-com is a squad based tactical strategy game from the past

I agree with Sunnycoder, you would probable be best to go with Age of Empires II (you can still grab it plus the expansion at Best buy for a fairly low price.)

Or did you mean current games?

I think some of you missed the question ;)

Programmer0000 is asking about 2D Real-time Strategy (RTS) games.

Warcraft3, Neverwinter Nights, Sims, etc, do not fall into this category.

Probably the best would be STARCRAFT (of course!) Warcraft/Warcraft II, Red Alert 2 (I think it was 2D), and there are many others, and of course we all have our favorites.

You might also check this site:

http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/rtsc_netgames.htm

Another question, Programmer0000. Why the specification of 2D? Personal preference, or do you have a technical limitation that you think won't support 3D RTS games?

Also check this article, it will give you an idea of when 3D first started in RTS (Cavedog's Total Anhihilation), and some good games and the history behind them.

hey chrispy, he may be one of the Isometric Game lover, don't push him to 3D ... (ha ha )
otherwise developers like us (isometric) would find difficult to sell our games

Programmer, you could leave this open for some time, and get more opinions.

I have noticed, Yasith, in several questions, that you seem to be the Commandoes Evangelist... are they paying you? They should! ;)

Ahh... developer... what company/game? I'd love to try your stuff! Or should I just DL Commandoes? <g>

And I am not sure if I have a 2D/3D preference... actually given my hardware, 2D is better for me! And thanks for providing 'isometic' that was the term I was looking for about perspective!

Empire Earth might not be 2d but it has by far the best multiplayer interface and an overall amazing game
