After a couple of CD or DVD changes my system locks up. Happens on installations or reading or burning.
I have an Intel MB D875PBZ W/P4 3.2 Extreme CPU, 1GIG DDR400 System RAM, Ultra 780 XP GeForce FX 5600 w/256MB DDR, 2-120GIG SATA RAID NTFS, 30GIG IDE FAT32, 40GIG IDE NTFS, 52X IDE CD, MSI DR8-A DVD, 2 NIC'S (ONE ON MB), Creative SB Audigy LS. I have a problem swapping CD's or DVD's, sometimes it will lock up when I insert a CD the first time, but it allways locks after the third swap. ?????
Is this WinXP? Try uninstalling the device in device manager and letting it reinstall when it reboots.

WinXP PRO. I tried your advice first, no luck. Next I uninstalled everything pertaining to CD/DVD writers, players, etc. Installed them one at a time with no results.
To isolate whether the drives themselves are bad, test them in another system. There is a possibility your power supply is bad, which could cause this.

I've tried the DVD drive in another system and it didn't lock it up, however it was the only CD/DVD drive on that system. The power supply and everything is only a couple of months old. The place I purchased it from said it was software related but I can't see it if I took all of the software off and loaded it back (locked up on every disk change during the install). I am not very satisified with the "tech's" at the place of purchase due to their not offering a swap of drives to see if is a defective unit. I have to leave this post for a few hours, but I'm open for any suggestions other than dynomite to solve this problem.

That's my next move, swapping the hard drives from primary IDE to secondary IDE and the CD's from secondary IDE to Primary IDE and leaving off one of the CD/DVD drives. But, I will have to do that later, I just landed a bunch of work that needs to be finished ASAP. As soon as I get to the drive swapping I will let you know how it came out, maybe tonight.

I disconnected the CD drive leaving the DVD/CD writer on the system and now EVERYTHING WORKS!!! Callandor, help yourself to the points and thanks for your time.
Glad I could help.
