If you navigate to browser extensions, which can be found from

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/browser/prog_browser_node_entry.asp

They'll tell you about the COM interfaces and other info to program a plugin for IE.

You can then either program your application
[i]  entirely as a COM library, or
[ii] perhaps create a very simple stub which fires up your program as an out of process server and passes the information back and forth between IE and your app.

[ii] might be better for development, as it can be very hard to debug complex projects hosted in someone else's application, and there might be some issues people having with your code getting inserted into IE directly.
