outlook error

my client is getting this error when he tries to connect to our our exchange server through pop3   with outlook xp

Task 'mail.usasa.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted.  If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).  The server responded: ?????'

any ideas?   i know that the server is not down
