ARCserv: backup device not available
Hi experts,
this might be an easy question for you but I'm not familiar with ARCserv: I have to configure a tape backup drive on Windows NT 4.0. The device is already installed and it is available in Windows NT. But the device is not available in ARCserv.
The goal of all of this is to restore data that were backed up years ago with ARCserv. Because of that it would also be a solution to recover the data using built in NT-Backup. Is this possible?
Any ideas? Is it necessary to install a special ARCserv driver for backup devices? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your comment ahmedbahgat! Do you know whether these arcserv special drivers come with the product CD or are also downloadable? On CA's eSupport I found a file "New Tapelist.dll" (size: 128 KB). Would you agree this could be a collection of these drivers?
No I do not think so, possibly it is a required file within a bunch of files, the driver file should be a file with inf extention, the files should be on Arcserve CD, most likely you will be prompted to use it or not during arcserve setup "i'm gussing as this is the case with Backup Exec", or even patches you install after the initial arcserve setup may fix the problem as it may include the updatted driver files
the files should be downloadable from CA web site, I just registered and waiting to be activated so I can search their support web site, but you are in the right place if you got time i'm sure you will find an answer on that web site
CA HO are about 5 KM from where I live, so I will also try to contact them and see, hopfully they will not ask me wher I bought the product from
cheers

Thanks again. It seems that on CA's website there is no support for versions earlier ARCserv 6.6. I found "NT -ADDED DEVICE FIX" for version 6.6. Maybe this will help if there are no appropriate drivers on the product CD.
I will go to the computer some hours later and I will try to install the drivers deliverd on the product CD. Until now I even don't know the version of ARCserv...

I will post that information if I have seen the machine. The owner itself was not able to tell me anything about that.

I'm now in front of the machine:
- Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6a
- ARCserv is version 6.5 (build 620) Single Server
- Hardware is 4 mm tape drive (Seagate)
In the control panel there is installed the following device: Archive Python 04687-xxxx. NT Backup recognizes a medium in the drive as a medium from another backup software.
The problem: If I start ARCserv device assistent then there are no drives available. In the event log there seem to be no errors. I can't find any special ARCserv device drivers on the product CD.

I have to correct my statement about event log:
There are 2 error items in the system log:
Event ID: 119, Source: quic117
followed by:
Event ID: 7000, Source: Service Control Manager
Start from quic117 failed with the following error:
The system cannot find the device.
I assume, the device driver that was insalled is the wrong one.

Not really. In SCSI BIOS utility the device is named exactly like that (ARCHIVE PYTHON 04687-xxx)

I've increase points to 500 because it's very urgent.
On http://www.certance.com/support/tape/drivers/win_nt_drivers.html I found that the 4MMDAT.SYS is the correct driver for Seagate drives that are named "Archive Python 04687-xxx". This driver is installed, SP6a was reinstalled and the tape device is visible in Control Panel - Backup devices. NT-Backup is even able to communicate with the device. But in ARCserv it isn't even visible.
I don't know what to do: Does anyone have an idea how can make the device

There is the following message in ARCserv: "Tape engine is stopped"
I had a look at the services in Control panel: There is no Tape Engine Service. Does ARCserv 6.5 need such a service?

ahmedbahgat, thanks for your help! I did uninstall and reinstall the application and now there are much more services and even much more applications in the ARCserv program group.... And of course the software can communicate with the tape device. I don't know what they had done at initial installation. Maybe the provided a wrong account information while installing the services which made the services to fail. But then there must have been some items in the event log. Strange.
We talked about ARCserv special device drivers at the beginning. Now I can say that ARCserv does NOT need such drivers. I knew about those drivers from BackupExec but ARCserv seems to use the Windows drivers.
Thanks again!
