Btrieve is a screaming fast database engine that is now part of Pervasive.SQL.
It was developed by Softcraft in the early 80's, when we started using it. It uses a B-tree structure which is easy and fast to navigate. It came out with a server piece shortly after IBM released DOS 3.3 which had networking components.
There were some issues with installation and data corruption in the early days which wre resolved long ago. There is a lot of left over unjustified resentment towards it. It is now extremely stable and still sports the fastest access method around.
It was sold to Novell around the time Netwre 3 was released and bundled with every copy. If you were careful with client side components it ran for years. Novell sold it back to Softcraft which became Btrieve Technologies, but retained some license for years.
Btrieve Technologies released version 6.15 and became Pervasive Software. Their development efforts appeared to be equally divided between the Pervasive.SQL relational engine and the Btrieve navigational engine.
Latest release is 8.5. Check out www.perasive.com and rock on.
