WIN2K VPN no gateway

I've created a VPN connection on a Windows 2000 professional PC.  I can establish and authenticate the connection from my WIN98 PC.  I cannot ping the VPN host, the gateway or any other PC.  It looks like I'm not getting a gateway assignment from the Win2k side and I can't see where to set the gateway for the connection on either end.  What am I missing?

You are connecting from a win98 machine to a win2k pro machine using a pptp or l2tp connection?

I got it figured out.  The ping is protected, but I can connect to the share with the "net use" anyway.
