I have a compaq 5888, win xp sp2 and all updates, with a HP deskjet 970cse. Tried to load new drivers from HP after upgrading from win 98se, and now it can't detect the printer on the usb port. It used to work fine in win 98, but after updating to XP I can't get the drivers to load because it doesn't see it. Tried uninstalling, diconnecting, then reloading and nothing! Any ideas?  AL

Go to start run type msconfig and hit enter then go to the startup tab mark on a piece of paper everything that is checked or unchecked (whichever is easier) then uncheck all of them. hit apply then ok reboot the system.

Remove the USB cable that is attached to the printer from the pc. DO NOT RECONNECT THIS CABLE UNTIL INSTRUCTED IT WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH THE INSTALL.

Go to either start, settings control panel add/remove programs and look for HP or start programs HP, xxx model printer , and select uninstall. (where xxx is the model number in this case 970cse)

Right click on my computer select properties go to the hardware tab then click on device manager then go to view select show hidden devices, look under printers see if the HP is listed if so remove it by right clicking on it and selecting uninstall. Also check under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, remove the usb root hub and if their is a specific HP one listed remove that. If their is one that says printers remove that also. DO NOT remove the USB host controller.

Reboot the computer

The printer's cable (USB or Parallel) must be unplugged before proceeding with driver installation.

Create a new folder on the hard drive: c:\dj970 before downloading the printer driver.
Download the driver to the newly created c:\dj970 folder.
(link for driver download - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=60097&os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&softwareitem=dj1229en    - Click on the download NOW link)

Open the c:\dj970 folder and double-click the downloaded "exe" file.
Dialog boxes indicating "Loading Files" and "Please Wait" will appear indicating files are being copied. Wait until the files are finished copying.
Click "Install Printer Software"
Note: If this screen is not present, check the taskbar for a minimized screen named "970c". Click on this item to activate this screen.
Follow the instructions on the installer screen to complete the installation.
Note: You may see a screen indicating the printer cannot be found. Click on the "Locate Printer" button to continue.

***************************DURING THE INSTALL SCREENS IT MAY TELL YOU TO CONNECT THE PRINTER IF IT DOES THEN CONNECT IT THEN OTHERWISE ONCE IT IS DONE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE CONNECT THE PRINTER

Note: There may be one or more printers installed. To verify the correct printer has been selected, do the following:

Click on the Start Menu
Click "Printers and Faxes"
Verify that the "hp deskjet 970c series" is present
Note: There may be more than one printer with "970c" in the name. The one WITH "series" in the name is the printer driver from HP. The one WITHOUT "series" in the name is the Built-In driver included in the Windows XP operating system.
Make sure the HP printer with driver with "series" in the name has a Check Mark next to it, indicating it is the default printer.
To make a printer the default printer, right click on the printer name and select "Set as Default Printer"

Go back to start run msconfig and recheck everything you unchecked then hit apply then ok then reboot.

Try to print it should be working now if not please let me know what the exact error message is.

All that is what I was doing to no avail! Found out that if the spooler is not started and in the automatic mode it won't install correctly! Came upon this by happenstance! Thanks for the help.  AL

thank you,

I would have helped you further but you never got back to me on if you had tried the above or what not ....otherwise I would have had you check the spooler and troubleshooted the problem further. Since you never posted any results I assumed you abandoned the question (which happens alot on here).
