asked on
setting up vpn
I am new to the world of networking. Exactly how do you set up a vpn. Do you need to go through someone or is this something that can be setup on your own. I do own a firewall that says
FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall netgear. I am not sure if that will help. This is for my home..
any ideas would be appreciated.

so you mean I do not have to go through anyone this can all be setup in my home and I do not have to pay for anything????
Why dont you just Click on PORTS and under 'DMZ' option Specify the LOCAL IP of computer that you want to remotely Access. Check the box to Enable it and then use the Static IP Adress thats assign to your Router from your ISP to Remotely Access your Computer from anywhere.
which os exactly you are running and where you wish to create your VPN server.
Vpn server can be run on win2k server family and later family of servers only.
So it is needed that you must tell me about this after that i will send you the line by line step of setting up of your own VPN server.
do send me your E-mail so that I could send you the line by line help file by attachment.

I do not have a server I am using xp pro
so you are pretty much saying that I would have to use the firewall and some type of software on a server to use vpn.
I guess I am confussed of how and what is involved with vpn.
adilkhan
I tried to do something with iis, but I am lost could you please go step by step in what you are asking me to do with hardware software. I would be interested. Remember I am new to all this.
thanks

First of all you need a destination computer to connect to via vpn,
that destination computer needs to be configured to accept vpn connections.

What exactly are you trying to use VPN for? To share documents? remotely administer you PC or what?
> I tried to do something with iis
No I was not Talking about IIS. I was talking about your Netgear Firewall.
I have the Same Firewal and I use DMZ option to Access my computer Remotely.
go to http://192.168.0.1 (Your FireWall IP)
From Left Click on PORTS.
Then Check the Box that says "Default DMZ". and in the IP Address Field type in the IP of the Computer that you want to Remotely Access.
Sids Note: To get that PC's IP Click on Start > Run and type cmd and then type IPCONFIG it will give you That Computer's IP.
Now This Computer Should be Ready to Access remotely from anywhere. (Your ISP Should not be Blocking The Ports)

DMZ is like Pc anywhere.
To connect via VPN you dont need SafeNet, thats just some netgearstuff...
What you need to do is to open the firewall for VPN, it should say how in the guide.
Since you have XP pro you dont need any VPN server, its all ready for VPN connections.
You will have to open the built in XP firewall for incoming requests, or disable it.
Then connections should be possible from any computer with a MS VPN client.

adilkhan, DMZ is nothing like PC anywhere!
DMZ is De Militarized Zone, this should ONLY be used for webservers and such.. NOT your home pc!! Big security hazard.. you are actually placing the PC outside the firewall...

but mattisflones Cant you Remotely Access your PC same as Pc anywhere by enabling DMZ?
You always have power to Enable/Disable in Netgear.

bman9111, so now you can connect to your PC via VPN?! Did you do that from another computer?
To connect to your computer via VPN youll use: \\(ipadress or pcname)\sharename.
not http:\\something.
http:// is for web use only. Still, this is something you do from the remote PC.
First of all you need to go to:
http://www.netgear.com/docs/fvs318/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm
Read chapter 6.
It tells you all you need to go through to set up a VPN. If theres any specific issues there you need help with just ask.
The guide says that you need a client with IPSEC capabilities, you allready have that in XP under network connections. but this is something you set up on the computer connecting TO your PC.
view this for instructions on VPN setup in XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305550
The IP you need to contact from the outside is your public IP, NOT the 192.* address, thats only for internal use and is worthless for VPN.
The username youll need to use is the username and password you have on your computer, if you dont have any youll need to create one.
To test you connection as we work on it youll need a second PC. If you dont have one i can test for you online.

Find your public IP here: http://www.whatismyip.com
Yes you own a Firewall with VPN compatiblity.
VPN is a secure tunnel between a server and a computer and works just like youre connected directly via your office network.
You can view and use all resources on the network like at work.
