How to Enhance a Signature

I am a novice to Photoshop and I am not sure if this is possible, but I think that if it can be done easily, Photoshop is the tool.  I have signatures that are faint, many shades of grey, that need to be added to a Word document.  Is there a way to pass over the pixels and have each one that has any level of grey become very black?  I have tried the brightness/contrast tool with mixed results.  I was hoping that by using layers or something else, I could wave my cursor over an area and darken the non-white pixels.
