redirect - page rank question

I have pages within my own site that are somewhat awkwardly named.  They've established a certain degree of page rank at Google for which I am grateful, but I'd like to rename the files.  I know a little about redirect..  never done it.. I know there are numbers associated with it (I think it's ?  301 or something), but I am trying to find out if I can change the file names of these few pages and send all traffic to where I'd like it to be (same content different name), and still be within legitimate bounds as far as Google is concerned.  Will I lose all page rank (for the new named files)?  What, if any way, is the correct way to go about this?
