Why doesn't 120GB Wester Digital Hard Drive does not spin up scusessfully in a USB 2.0 casing?

When i install the HD into the USB case it starts to spin up and then stops. It just keeps on doing that no matter what the jumper configuration is. Western Digital told me that my drive was no good so they shipped me a new one. It has the same problem so can i assume that the drive isn't really fauilty and there just something wrong with what I'm doing?

Are you sure you use a USB 2.0 port on the PC?

Yes. Its a laptop with a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card. Anyway, the drive casing is backwards compatible. I also tested the case with an ExelStor 40GB drive that I took out of a differrent casing.
Did you try the solution on other computers? Might be the laptop that dont handle/accept it to well..
It worked when put inside a regular PC but still had problems witht he case. A Seagate drive, when installed brand new out of the box into the exact same case worked with zero configuration.
Might be the cases controller/plugs or something that makes the problem?!
Remove the master slave jumper from the WD hard drive this forces  a master with no slave present. I think you will find that this will now work.
Nope. No go. Maybe another fauilty drive?
What usb case are you using brand and model number?
A no name brand. I know. Thats what I get for being cheap. Its just annoying that the Seagate drive works w/o problems.
The case is self powered and not through the USB correct?
It may be that the powersupply is just not spinning the WD drive up as it is with the Seagate.
What is the output of the power supply?
Since the drive works internally on another pc it should be fine.

What is the HDD capacity of the WD? USB HDD cases have different capacity limitations depending on the brand and model. What is the capacity of the Seagate versus the WD?  If the WD is bigger than the Seagate, maybe that's the problem. Most limitations on USB cases seem to be at around 160GB, but they vary.
my friend has the exact same case with a Seagate 120GB drive (same as my WD) and it also workied without problems and zero configuration.
