Loading and saving variables from a Flash Game using actionscript

I am trying to develop a game using actionscript in Flash. I have a large number of variables in several arrays which I need to be able to save and load as appropriate. The documentation isn't very helpful. I gather the variables will be exported to a text file as a string. Could someone give me some guidance on this. Imagine the Flash file is called Game and the text file target is at c:\Variables.doc. I have tried to do this but nothing appears in the text file. Also, I have a large number of variables stored in arrays. Will these all be concotated together into one long string of characters. If so I don't so how I can usefully load them back up into their proper places in the arrays again. Any suggestions?

Thanks
