Missing FRS Service
I am having problems with some GPO's not running.  In the process of troubleshooting, I noticed that the policy had not replicated to one of my servers (\\<servername>\sysvol\<domainname>\policies).  On the server that is missing the policies, I went to restart FRS and it is not in the service list.  I went to a command prompt and issued the command "net stop ntfrs" and it told me that the service is not running.  I issued the command "net start ntfrs" and I go the message "The service is not responding to the control function".  In the event log there was this message "The NT File Replication service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".  It is a Windows 2000 Server and a domain controller.  My other servers are Windows 2003.

Is your DFS Service enabled? Without this, DC's will not replicate much of anything (or at least not reliably)

njmervine:  That server is a domain controller.

JamesDS:  That sounds like a good plan.  Using FRSDiag, I discovered that it last successfully ran in November of 2003...  That server does not have any of the FSMO roles, so I will attempt this weekend to demote and then promote the server.  If I run into any problems, I will give Microsoft tech support a call.

Thanks very much, glad you are on the right track =)

Windows 2000 is an operating system for use on both client and server computers. It is the successor to Windows NT 4.0, and is the last version of Microsoft Windows to display the "Windows NT" designation. Four editions of Windows 2000 were released (Professional, Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server) that shared a core set of features, including many system utilities such as the Microsoft Management Console. All versions of the operating system support NTFS 3.0, Encrypting File System, as well as basic and dynamic disk storage. The Windows 2000 Server family includes support for Active Directory services, Distributed File System and fault-redundant storage volumes.
