Cannot Copy / Paste in Windows 2000

Hi all,

I am unable to copy and paste in Windows 2000. Whether I try to copy by right-clicking, or by using CTRL-C and CTRL-V, or by using the Edit menu, it doesn't want to paste what I copied.

I installed the Windows Clipboard Viewer, and I can see the item I copied in the clipboard. So it's at least getting that far. But won't paste. No errors appear when you try and paste an object, although one of the servers does DOUBLE BEEP when you try and paste. (I'm having this trouble on a couple of computers - both Windows 2000 Server and are completely seperate from each other   i.e 2 different sites and networks)

I have checked group policies, have checked for any foreign processes, have checked all possible IE and File options and security options. I have run Registry Monitors to see what keys are used during a paste procedure (there's hundreds for some reason, typical microsoft).

Only thing that has happened in common with both these servers is, that their primary HDD in a software mirror, has failed and been replaced. Replaced by changing the jumper on the secondary to make it the master, then installing the replacement HDD as the secondary. One server is IDE and the other is SCSI.

But forget about that part of it (unless it's relevant). Any ideas what I should look at regarding this copy and paste issue? I'm stumped!!!!

Thanks in advance!

P.S  I am able to copy successfully using command prompt. I can also copy fine if I connect to a share on the server from a workstation and copy and paste files that way. Seems to be a local Windows-based problem with the servers.  I have also checked the profiles by creating the profile and using other accounts when logging in, so it's not a profile issue. Help!

If you do have group policies enabled. Have you tried disabling group policy for computers and users, and see if you still get the event?

Haven't tried that. Didn't think that would matter as the computers in questions are the actual server itself. No group policies are applied to it, especially when logged in as Administrator.

There's no group policies set anyway, well at least at one of the sites anyway.
Does it also fail with admin rights?

It fails no matter who logs into the server. Although I don't actually log in as a user (it's a server afterall). I always login as administrator. It definately doesn't seem to be a permissions problem...
Did it work before?

Yes. Absolutely. It has always worked until now. Ever since the hard drive mirror failure and the drive being replaced, it has stopped working.
This problem can happen if you have some virus's and I think also happened on some machines that had SP4 installed.

As there a server I'm guessing they have good AV protection?
If not, try an online virus scan at www.symantec.com
indeed, there is a good chance (if we can call it a chance) that you got a virus.
I ran into this problem, too. exactly the same, could not copy paste.
It was due to the Blaster virus.
Check if you have viruses (particularly Blaster) on your machine.
I have seen this one before too and it was definitely caused by Blaster on both a server and workstations.
I concur with Jarker, I had the same problem recently on a couple of servers that had been infected with the TeeKids variant of MSBlast.  Download and run the FixBlast app from Symantec - and make sure you have the latest security updates on the machine (nb. FixBlast will prompt you to load these if they're not already there)

I've fixed it myself! Thanks for everyone's help....
Oh, and I had already checked for all viruses and spyware etc

To fix the problem, I did a repair of Internet Explorer 6 by using this command line;

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Reboot the server afterwards. Worked like a treat!

Thanks all....
