1608 unable to create install driver instance
I am attempting to install a D-Link DWL-520 Wireless network card, and I am getting this error - 1608 unable to create install driver instance. I tried the D-Link website, but I didn't find anything. I am attempting to install it on a W2K machine that was upgraded from Windows ME. Could this be the issue, as I do know that ME is a piece of junk. (Hence the upgrade to 2000)
I am attempting the install with the network card NOT in the machine first, as instructed by the manual, so I know that's not the issue.
Please help.

Thanks for the info, but I did try the latest drivers, and they do tell me on the disk that this unit should work with 2000. I don't think the firmware will make a difference at this point, as I can't even get the card installed properly. (have to install drivers, then shutdown, then install the card)
The card that I have is the E1, and they are telling me that the drivers work with 2000 / XP

I'm not going to mess around with the service pack if I have to kill 2000 and start over because the ME update didn't work well.
Forgot to mention before someone asks, yes I am installing as administrator.

I actually do have the latest drivers (downloaded earlier thinking that was the issue), but a good idea anyways.

Well I don't have time to be messing with something as stupid as this issue. There is nothing of importance on this machine, so I'm going to do a fresh install of 2000, and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I will throw it through the window. <g>
Don't do that eccs19 -- windows XP is SO SO SO SO SO much better than 2000. Give it a chance. First truly STABLE MS OS in as long as they have done windows. The only true stable MS OSs were DOS 6.22 and windows XP -- don't deprive yourself of some enjoyment for a change. Go out and get/rip XP PRO -- PRO only -- no Home -- and realize that you can ENJOY computers for a change. Believe me -- I am RIGHT!!!!! It is MILES better than 2000.

Oh I believe you about Windows XP. I'm running it myself, but this computer I think is just a little to old, and XP won't run well on it. It's not mine, so I can't put on something on it the customer doesn't have / want to buy.
Well then, sufferance. But if that's what they want, let them live with it. At least you know, and that's what counts :)
The bad news is that this card does not work in windows XP, and therefore maybe not W2000 either --

Sounds like they have not written a 32 bit driver installation routine yet -- but that should not stop you getting the drivers installed.
Look at this page to see exactly which model you have --
http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=42#drivers
That will determine if you need to update the firmware or not. If you do, it is on that same link.
Then just click on your picture, and you will get the right drivers for that model for windows 2000. Those drivers may need to be extracted to the hard disk first. After that, I would think you could just insert the card, reboot 2000, and when it asks for drivers, point it to the directory where you extracted the drivers from the net.
Nothing is uncrackable, even a bad software setup. Good luck
