Unable to use Recovery Console in Windows XP Pro
Folks,
Whilst searching for a fix to a problem that I am trying to get for a friend of mine, I came across a similar thread discussing exactly the problem I´m encountering with XP Professional (SP1).
The original problem is a stop error (0x00000051) which prevents the laptop from booting from any of the options at the advanced menu (F8). When I try and use the recovery console and select windows configuration 1 (c:\windows), the blue screen of death appears with the same error.
In the question posed last year by someone, it appears that a solution was to use a package called ERD Commander instead of the recovery console provided in the Windows installation CDs.
Other than ERD commander (which I do not have and am unlikely to be able to get here in a remote part of South America), is there any other method of being able to access the command line in the situation described above? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation!

Just tried the procedure outlined in the repair install guide, but to no avail.
I get as far as the license agreement for setting up Windows XP and when I press F8 to accept the terms and conditions, bang, the same problem with the blue screen and stop error 0x00000051.

Folks,
Thanks for the suggestions - I´ve taken a look at the web link going over the explanation of the stop error 51. The first two parameters given in the dump are the same (0x00000003) in my case. However, I noticed that this is angled at Windows 2000, but I wouldn´t be surprised if this applied to multiple products such as Windows XP Pro. Do you have any ideas as to whether this is the case?
As for taking out the external devices, I will see if I can get my hands on some tools to do this. I need to get hold of an earth strap and try to get a clean environment as it´s incredibly dusty here on the edge of the Amazon!
Thanks again for your help! Just need to get down the road now and give some of these options a try. Back to you soon.

Folks,
Firstly, thank you for all your responses - I really appreciate it and have split the points according to the responses. Each of the answers were valid in their own right. In the end, I tried all of the above suggestions, including taking out devices from the laptop (eg. hard drive, RAM etc). Still no joy on this particular machine....
In the end, reinstalled Windows and this did the trick. Had some help from a local guy here, and he says (via a translator), that he´s seen this problem several times before with XP, and each time it could be cured with a clean install of Windows. Hope this experience helps someone else to avoid the time and frustrations this has been :)
Thanks again for your help!
Dave.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
