Java application to read the barcodes

Hi,
      I am doing a application for which i need to read the barcode on the book. I am having laser to get the input (barcode). how can i use the input from the laser input device for reading the barcodes and to process the barcode

Tell me is there any free API available or any other for the same(free of charge).

Many barcode scanners that are made to work with PCs can plug into a keyboard input.  When you scan the barcode, the barcode number gets inputted as if the user had typed it in with a keyboard.  This can make it very easy to integrate it with you application.

Just for information: the bar-code is likely to be replaced by RFID tags in all big stores/ retail markets:

Sun is also supporting it, 'coz the biggest retailers like Walmart, Metro wanna adopt RFID ASAP.
