compaq deskpro 4000 6233 mmx 1790 disk erroe

My hard drive went bad and i had to replace it. The problem is my hard drive is 40 gig and event though i have formatted and begun os installation, when the system restarts i get a 1790 disk error. With a smaller gig (2 gig ) drive i don't get the error. Can you help me ?

That is an incorrect configuration error: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000406.htm
Either the driver is improperly jumpered, or it is not being detected correctly.  If it's not detected properly, your BIOS may be too old and need an update, especially if a small 2GB drive is detected correctly.

firmware was to old, had to upgrade.
