Files on Flash Drive Not Usable After Mac Comes Out of Sleep

This question is not urgent, just still following up on issues related to flash drives. I had one client whose G4 went into kernel panic because of her flash drive. Now I have another who cannot open any files on her flash drive if her Powerbook goes to sleep with the flash drive in. It does two different things, 1) doesn't let her open her Illustrator files even if she removes them from the flash drive and 2) tells her that the flash drive was not removed properly.

I have researched this on the web. I find the problem in tech support forums, but no solution other than to turn off the sleep mode.

If she removes the flash drive before it goes to sleep, all is well. It is related to the energysaver function.

Is there a fix other than to stay awake forever?

Just tried it with my own flash drive and was unable to replicate the problem. What version of the OS are they using? Are they current?

She just got 10.2 something. Not Panther, but close. I don't know why it is happening. I do find it on the web in tech support and FAQ posts. But no one has any solution. As I said, I told her to disable the sleep feature. I am really just trying to figure out if there is a workaround.

The fix is probably to update to 10.3.4. 10.3 itself was a big step forward from 10.2 in terms of handling media.

Works fine for me in Panther.  I think upgrading to the latest OS would fix this problem.
