This Compaq Presario 2700 has very dim screen. I have tried all the basics like Fn+F8 for brightness control and also hooking up an external monitor. The external monitor works just fine. The brightness control doesn't work at all. Either making it darker or lighter. You can still barely see the images in the background and start menu etc..

So I came up with that it has to be the CCFL, or inverter.

Question #1: Is that all possible causes for this? Those two items I mentioned.
Question #2: Can you point me the way for instructions on replacement of these items.

Thanks

In all the laptop repairs I have done, it always has been the inverter.  I have never actually seen a dead ccfl blub before.  The inverter just quits.

The inverters are fairly easy provided you aren't afraid of tearing apart your laptop.  You will need to open the lcd lid assy.  The basics are to first look for exposed screw holes (not usually the case) and then look for rubber stoppers that are in the plastics that can be popped out.  Once you pop them out, quite often the screwheads will be behind them.

Then go ahead and remove all the screws and then be very careful and pop the front bezel off to expose the inner workings of the screen .

Then you will need to remove the inverter, it is usually the circuit board that is along side or underneath the lcd assy.

Make sure you do this with the laptop off, battery out, and unplugged.

You might find an inverter on ebay for fairly inexpensive.

BTW one note, i forgot to clarify that in all my laptop repairs, it was the very very dark screen was caused by the inverter failing.
