A custom control is a control that you write yourself (or obtain from a 'third party'). In otherwords, it is a control that is not a standard part of Visual Studio.NET.

You would normally create a custom control to independantly perform a task or implement a graphical aspect of your web application. It may be generic enough to use in more than one context, or then again it may perfom a specific function within your application.

An advantage of user controls is that they can be cached, which effectively allows you to cache only specific parts of a web page.
