I try to delete a message and it gives me the message "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook.
I have done the following:
Restarted Outlook numerous times, done satisfactorily but still same error.
Repair and Detected Outlook numberous times, done satisfactorily but still same error.
Repaired Office installation, done satisfactorily but still same error. and finally
uninstalled Office and reinstalled...still same error? Is it a virus because I did a scan and still couldn't find anything....PLEASE HELP!! I professionally live off my emails.

Which version of Outlook are you using? Which OS are you using?
Try using scanpst.exe on your pst file. The scanpst.exe file is located in c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\
After launching the scanpst.exe direct it to your outlook.pst file which is probably located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Logon Name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
If it finds errors and asks you to repair, definitely follow its prompt to make a backup.

If you have Outlook 2002 in Windows xp , then this may be the cause

Not sure if user tried all comments here
I created a new PST file, opened it, and that manually moved all my files into that PST. Then I deleted the old one. It works fine now.

I have Outlook 2002 and all of a sudden I am getting the message "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook." This happens when I try to delete a meassge or messages. Have tried using scanpst.exe to repair Outlook but the error message is the same.

An interesting approach was used by this person when Microsoft couldn't provide an answer:

Hope this helps!
