QuickTime play won't open

The QuickTime player fails to open.  An error message appears:

Quicktime player has encountered a problem and needs to close

Error signature
version 6.5.1.17
ModName quicktime.qts
modVer 6.5.1.17

Exception information (with hundreds of numbers!!!!)

The player can be uninstalled in two different ways... I uninstalled and reinstalled twice... once for each type of uninstall... I used before each reinstall a registry cleaner and Norton WinDocter to get rid of files referencing quicktime.

Anybody have a clue why the program won't install and run?

I do buy a pro key but need to get the free version running to enter the key.

This could mean a number of things:

The file you are trying to open is probably corrupted, especially if over an internet connection. In that case you can't do anything.
The file you are trying to open uses a technology plugin you dont have installed, install it by going to QuickTime options and clicking update >> update all.
The file is not supported. HAHA! Can't do a thing.
Your driver is not supported by QuickTime. You must buy new hardware, especially Video or Sound hardware, don't make it too new, as quicktime must catch up.
The file is not completely downloaded or failed to download because of an interruption. Refresh the page to fix.
QuickTime is acting stupid. It will complin about files missing and stuff, thats why I prefer Windows Media Player.

Hi billyea,

I am not trying to open a file, just the player.

Quicktime ran just fine until recently.

My hardware is expensive and relatively new:

A well-equiped Dell Dimension

QuickTime is indeed acting stupid.  I have several .mov files.  They open just fine on my laptop.

Also, quicktime.qts (the ModName in your Error Signature) was marked recently with a high risk of overflow, which is when the memory is flooded with junk.
Remember to get the latest version of QuickTime before you start playing movies.
It might be that the files on the internet dont work, this is cause by MASS upload, in which there is MASS confusion.
You say it works fine on your computer but not from the net, then it is a problem with the quick time plugin.
I reccoment updating, and plz poste it up here so I may baffle at it. :D

Downloaded the latest version... twice... cleared registry... have gig of memory...not trying to play movies... trying to open player... not uploading from Internet... not trying to make work from Internet... have files on hard disk that played fine.... now not... please note what I have already written... can not open quicktime despite reinstall and cleared registry...

Did you try uninstalling, then searching for quicktime.qts and removing it manually ? Or at least confirming that it has been removed. Perhaps that file is not being fixed during your un/re-installed sessions.

Have you tried the free version? Does it work? If it does, stick with it and ask for a refund. Tsk, quicktime stinks.
Since the free version is simpler, it is less likely something will go wrong.

I was using the free version. Upgraded. Then failure occured. I uninstalled twice as indicated and downloaded the free version both times as this is the version that can be uprgraded with the $30 key. Need the pro version to combine mov files, which the free version will not do. Now can't open the free version to upgrade to the pro version so I can combine the mov files.  Yuk... quicktime appears to stink!!! Obviously, not an original thought.  Will try again using TMacT's idea to search for and delete quicktime.qts file. What is that file supposed to do?

Thanks,

Laudie
First you might want to just make sure you are using correct drivers, just to be safe(U can use aida32 to make sure). Thats what i think causes most problems with quicktime.
Or you might want to try the quicktime alternative.

Adecold,

Correct drivers for what? What is the Quicktime alternative? Sill haven't tried TmacT's solution. Just got back from vacation. Caught one Wyoming Rainbow and cooked it for my daughter. She called it the $30 fish... 3 licenses for one day... got stormed out... She loved it... worth $30!!!  There is a life beyond Quicktime.

 Laudie
Well, the Quicktime alternative is Slowtime, but let's not get into that. Use Windows Media Player (if you have Windows [and who doesn't...have it A LOT]). I use Windows Media Player and it's never failed me for about half-an-hour. If you wanna be on the safe side, go try some others, like RealPlayer (which is known to have bugs, but that can be remedied).
If you use Mac, a simply use one of the availiable Mac acessories that come free with it.

Billyea,

WMP does not play mov files much less combine them.

TMacT suggested:

"Did you try uninstalling, then searching for quicktime.qts and removing it manually ? Or at least confirming that it has been removed. Perhaps that file is not being fixed during your un/re-installed sessions."

I search for the qts file after uninstalling Quicktime.  Sure enough, it was still existant.  I deleted it.  Reinstalled Quicktime.  Damn... same problem... comes up with the same message as mentioned in my question...

You Device drivers... When you have little problems like maybe if the sound/video card installed does not have the correct or recent drivers installed. Since you already have a premium serial and seems you like quicktime you might want to try fixing it instead of an alternative
Using any alternative media player will most llikely restrict you from playing .mov files.
WMP or realmedia wont play .mov files.

There is no alternative to Quicktime if one need to deal with mov files.  That's the problem.  I do not like Quicktime... if I never had to deal with the program again, I would be a happy man. Will check on drivers for sound/video card(s) when I get some time. WMP is my default player, which is fine with me. Adecold... the link you sent is "project closed," whatever that means.

thanks for comments

Quicktime alternative can play .mov files online and offline..... it can intergrate easily to your browser and get this... even other media players like WMP9, realplayer .. .allowing .mov files to play in them

Sorry i gave you the wrong site... but for some reason the whole concept of the free resource offering of the site(http://www.k-litecodecpack.com)

Anyways here is more info
====================================================================
QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install QuickTime Player from Apple. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages. The very user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.
It is highly recommended to uninstall all existing QuickTime related software, like QuickTime Player, before installing. This way your system stays clean and potential problems
====================================================================

Theres also real alternative.... which allows you play .rm files without having real player

You can dowload them both in the k-lite mega codec pack that also includes all mpeg4 coded

All you want to download is still available on the sites mirrror site

Sorry for the bad link
Hope it helps

Sorry Turn123,

Left town for awhile then got totally distracted by other issues.  Still haven't resolved the QuickTime issue, which is that I need to edit mov files and can't get QuickTime to work. It may be that I need to reinstall Windows but that may be more work than I care to do right now.  In other words, while much of the information here is valuable, none of it has allowed me to get QuickTime running. So, for now it may be best to close the question.  If any of the experts here believe they deserve some points, don't be shy... let me know and they shall be yours. And, again, my apologies to all for allowing this question to go unattended for so long.

Thanks,

Laudie
