Hello All,

I am realively new to Filemaker and have inherited a database that has containers with embedded images. What I need to do is use ASp or ASP.net to make search results vieable on a web page. I have been able to connect and set up queries in asp, but the images come back as a question mark (?) in the resilt set.

How can i get the actual image to be displayed??

Thanks

Mike

Hi,

This is a big problem and I do not have any pretty solution, since Images in containers are a very irritating issue and are very difficult to manage.

In a similar case, I recommended that they have only thumbnails of images in the containers and have the big images as JPEGs in a folder. Then look at the small image in FM and preview (via webserver and FM->URL call) in a browser. That works perfectly.
The problem of reading/writing images to/from container? There is a FileMaker Plugin for importing images, where you have a lot of control. Perhaps it can also automatically export images now. But I doubt it. We use it to synchronize images between the JPEGs and the thumbnails, thereby overwriting the thumbnails in DB. Anyhow, the plugin is called Troi (http://www.troi.com/) Very good apps they do.

To export all images, I would try to automate, via some kind of VB script Filemaker & VB to export the images. But it would be some kind of customised solution for that special case.

If it is only a matter of few images, I would recommend to export them manually. If there are MANY images in the DB, then you have "custom hacking" ahead.

NO, WAIT!!!! I just started FM7 and there it IS possible to "Export field contents to a JPEG!" So all you have to do is a FileMaker script that exports all the images. Something like:
start first record
loop
   goto field
   export field to filename
   go to next record
end of loop

I have not tested the above, but it should be somehow possible to get it to work...

Download a tryout of FM7 and check it out!

Or talk/mail the Troi people - they seem smart - perhaps they have some better solution.

With a smile
