SharePoint Template - Frontpage 2002

Hi

I'm want to use the Sharepoint template provided with Frontpage 2002 to develop our intranet.

Our server is Windows 2003.

My understanding is that I can run this template on the server if Windows Sharepoint Server (WSS) is installed and the WSS is provided free with Win 2003 and that WSS needs to be configured on Win 2003.

I need to go through a Business Analyst at my work (who liases with the company who provides our server capacity) to try an achieve this and I have been told that my unit will need to pay approximately US$3000 for a SharePoint licence and installation.

Now, I don't know a lot about all this but do I need a Sharepoint licence to run this free Frontpage template on a Win 2003 server - I can understand needing to pay to configure the WSS but do I need to pay for a SharePoint licence?

Any step by step advice and information would be much appreciated because I really do not know much at all about servers and what I need to do to run this template for our intranet.

Many thanks

You don't need any WSS license. In fact there is no such thing. WSS licensing is covered with Server 2003 CAL. Maybe you have been given the price of full Sharepoint Portal Server, which is a different product.
See this MS link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/sharepoint.mspx
If you need to give access to clients outside your company, you need to purchase Server 2003 External Connector License:

hope this helps

Hi

Re the possible need of purchases a Server 2003 External Connector License.

We want to use the frontpage 2002 SharePoint template to build our intranet.

50% of our staff are located around the country and log on to our network via a vpn. Once they logon the idea is that they view the intranet. Do we require a  Server 2003 External Connector License because our staff are accessing the network remotely via a vpn?

one more quickie - when would I need Sharepoint Portal Server? I've read the microsoft link above but cannot understand its practical uses.

Many thanks

Hi

I'm back again and getting more and more confused :) A colleague has just sent me this link http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/sharepoint/trial.mspx

I was interested in the frontpage template because it was effectively sharepoint for free once you had a 2003 server with WSS enabled.

Would I be correct in saying that the option he sent me would be one I would have to pay for once the trial expired??? Does anyone know what is the difference in functionality between the Frontpage sharepoint template and the sharepoint link above??

Any clarity and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The link is offering a web site based on WSS and is hosted by a third party server. You pay for the service they provide you.
