PRF files >>> what are they?

Does anyone know what are prf files, some of the example filenames are prf8d.tmp or prf9c.tmp.  They always start with prf with a number and a letter before the extension.  We have roaming profiles and our server is very slow at when users shutdown their machine.  I saw a few prf files that were about 500 mb in one of the user's profile.  Does anyone know where they come from, is it an application producing these files?
