Arcserve 2000 differential backup crashing :(

I am running Arcserve 2000 and my differential backup is crashing.  I disabled verify thinking that would resolve it and it still crashes. I looked at the log and the log is full of warnings at the end of the backup, they are AW warnings saying that the file has changed since the backup. What would cause it to crash? Also we use Backup manager for open files and I keep getting a warning that the 'Preview size has been exceeded', what does this mean and could it be related to the crashing?  I am new to Arcserve, I am a Veritas user. If anyone has any links to any tutorials that would be great. Any ideas?

1) backup status crash - the typical reason is a problem at the Tape Engine end. Put the Job Engine in debug. ARCserve program group, ARCserve Server Admin., Configuration, Job Engine tab, message level debug. Then see what shows up in the activity log, or post it here.
2) Don't disable verify that is your way of knowing if the tape can be read.
3) Those warnings may or may not be important. They are at the end of the job because that is when it does the verify. You have to check each one to see if it is a file that should normally change. If these are static files then there is data corruption and it needs to be tracked down.
4) Not sure about the preview size. Open the OFA gui and check the help for preview size. My guess is that the drive might be running low on disk space. It is doubtfull that it is related to the backup crashing.
5) Best place to start is (believe it or not) the manuals, readme, and the online help. The manuals are on the CD in the docs directory, the readme is in the ARCserve directory, and the online help well is in the program. Links will not work since you have to register, which is a good idea. Go to http://esupport.ca.com/ then click Login or My Support and then New User. There is a good tech docs section that you should check out.

Here is a basic run down. ARCserve is made up of engines, Job - runs the jobs, Tape - sends SCSI commands directly to the backup device, Database and Message. There is also an Alert Manager which handles automatic notifications. Job and Tape Engines have debug logs which can be enabled via the Server Admin. Normally in 2000 the tape log is disabled because it grows fast. Unlike most other programs it does not use (nore should there be loaded) tape device or media changer drivers.

Thanks for your reply.  I am running a Full backup this evening. Originally this was crashing as well, but I have since got it to backup, although it does backup as 'incomplete'.  What would cause an incomplete backup?  I will let you know tomorrow how the differential backup goes.  Thanks again.

If one or more files are missed then the backup is incomplete.

Another thing that is happening is that every time I run a full backup it will not start until I erase the tape.  I have modified the job to write over the same and any existing media, but still the same result.  When I came in this morning, a dialog box said 'Please mount media'. I erased the tape and the backup is running.  How do I overcome this?

Well that depends on the type of job. Jobs that use a Media Pool such as GFS and Rotation must have either a blank tape or a tape from the Media Pool. If the tape is formatted and not part of the pool it will not be used.

When you are dealing with a stand alone tape drive it is not a big deal but when you have a library with many tapes it can become tricky so the options to overwrite a tape is over rided by the Media Pool rules.

So it comes back to the type of job.

okay here is an update:  I was going to run dbcheck and it was taking forever, so I initialized the database and I freed up 6 GB of hard drive space!  I then did a full backup, which ran quicker and finished as incomplete.  I then ran the differential for testing purposes and it crashed again!  The differential backup is crashing when it verifies.  I have it set to compare to disk. The error in the activity log was 'Cannot compare DBAgent Session'. What do you think is the cause of the crash?

Also I am running a single DLT HP tape drive, so there is no GFS rotation or library issues to worry about thankfully.

That is just an informational message and would not cause a job to crash.

Make sure these are installed
QO49312.CAZ 45.5 MB       01/05/2004       NT -ARCSERVE 2000 SERVICE PACK 5
QO52950.CAZ 427 KB        04/01/2004        NT -SYSTEM STATE BACKUP JOB CRASHES
QO53875.CAZ 155 KB        04/27/2004         NT -GFS BACKUP WITH COMPARE CRASH DURING COMPARE

and yes I understand that you are not running GFS, but since it is for a job that crashes on compare it might take care of your problem also.

I was just reading through a few posts on SP5 on tek-tips and there seems to be issues on the restore after sp5 has been installed:

Not possible to restore with SP5
thread478-797678

Have you ever heard of this before?  Should I go ahead and install SP5?

I followed the thread when it was posted, but that is the only such complaint that I know of against it and I have worked with more than a few that used it with no problem.

I see you have two choices:
1) try the updates
2) enable debug at the Job and Tape Engines to see if a cause shows up there.

My advise is to install the updates.

Okay here is what resolved it.  I looked at the Dr. Watson logs and it showed an error C0000005, access violation.. I applied SP5 and the QO52950.CAZ patch and it has resolved the issue.  Thanks :)
